The Australian government is launching a new National Innovation Visa (NIV) by the end of 2024, replacing the current Global Talent Visa (subclass 858). It is a direct pathway to permanent residency, designed for exceptional entrepreneurs, major investors, and global researchers.
Queensland was among the first states to announce its nomination criteria. If you want to obtain a Queensland nomination for NIV858, here’s everything you need to know.

Please note: The Queensland Government’s role is to nominate candidates suitable for the visa. However, it cannot guarantee that your Expression of Interest (EOI) will be selected by the Department of Home Affairs, which will make the final visa decision.

Key Highlights of the NIV
The focus of NIV858 is on quality rather than the quantity of investment:
Investment Quality: While there is no specified minimum investment amount, projects with substantial and meaningful contributions (e.g., affordable housing or tech innovation) are likely to gain priority.
Technology and Impact: Businesses with exceptional technology or products that can enhance Queensland’s economy or innovation are highly desirable.
⚠️ Important Notes:Queensland does not provide specific investment thresholds but prioritises candidates who can contribute long-term economic and technological benefits. NIV858 remains Australia’s only direct PR pathway for high-net-worth individuals.
